What is Schotstek?

Schotstek is so much more than just a scholarship programme that fosters smart and ambitious students and young professionals from an immigrant background and a network. We are not aware of any other programme that has provided this target group with such intensive coaching and networking over many years. Schotstek is committed to promoting the innovative power of cultural diversity as a driving force behind society, business and science. Anyone who launches their career as a Schotstek scholar is seeking to help the future of Germany.

How long does a Schotstek scholarship last?

Once Schotstek, always Schotstek: we offer bespoke support at every career stage – for entry-level professionals, juniors, doctoral candidates and alumni.
‍Starters will receive the support of a specialist programme in their first year. Starting from their second year, juniors benefit from in-depth mentoring and have access to an extensive range of events.
‍Doctoral candidates receive support and a close-knit peer network in our PhD club.
‍Alumni remain active within Schotstek and, once settled in their careers, act as important advisors and supporters for new starters.

Who is eligible to apply for the Schotstek programme? How and where can I apply?

Students at the state universities and higher education institutions in Hamburg, Lüneburg and Lübeck, as well as young professionals from these regions, are welcome to apply; in 2022, applications were also opened up to Berlin. Our programme is aimed at gifted and ambitious students from an immigrant background across all disciplines. Starters can apply from 1 March to 1 May via our website, whereas YPs can apply via the site from 1 March to 1 July. The programme will then begin on 1 September.

Is the German language a prerequisite for applying?

Yes. The majority of our scholars have grown up in Germany; we expect our other scholars to have at least B2-level German.

Why should I apply to Schotstek? How do I stand to benefit?

Schotstek offers bespoke support, networking and coaching over several years – from the start of study all the way to a job. That’s our hallmark. Anyone looking to make a flying start to their career and who has ambitious goals needs a strong social and professional network, which is something else we offer our scholars.

Why do students and young professionals from an immigrant background need extra support?

Not everyone starts from a level playing field when it comes to life and careers. Some of us are less privileged than others. This may have its root cause in financial reasons or a lack of social support, such as when someone’s family doesn’t even live in Germany. Our mission is to make the circle of decision-makers more diverse and to foster a dialogue between people within different BPOC communities. Because we know that everyone has to demonstrate considerable personal initiative to achieve a successful career (e.g. excellent degree results), but that a strong and supportive network of people who believe in them is no less important.

When does the Schotstek application phase begin? How long does the application phase last?

The application phase runs from the start of March to the start of May each year. In early May, we then send out the invitations for the jury interviews for the programme starting on 1 September.

What is the best way to prepare for my application to Schotstek?
